Comment est apparue la catégorie de pensée des phénomènes sociaux que nous englobons aujourd’hui sous le terme d’économie, mot désignant autrefois un ordre de la vie domestique ? Une question de cette importance, pourtant négligée, trouve une réponse dans les écrits sur le commerce qui privilégient la mise en rapport des échanges avec la production plutôt que la résolution de questions pratiques. Deux ouvrages émergent de ce point de vue : le Traicté de l’oeconomie politique (1615) d’Antoine de Montchrestien et l’Essai sur la nature du commerce en général (1755) de Richard Cantillon. Les historiens, économistes et philosophes réunis ici, spécialistes de diverses périodes et sociétés, ont posé aux deux ouvrages fondateurs les mêmes questions sur leurs appareils de référence et sur leurs éventuelles connivences intellectuelles. Montchrestien en sort réhabilité ; Cantillon démontre sa pertinence. Demeure alors le long débat qu’ils inaugurent pour classer ou non le savoir nouveau dans l’ordre du politique ou en dehors de lui. |
