Cet ouvrage est le premier rédigé en français sur l'histoire contemporaine de la lecture en Grande-Bretagne. L'étude présentée ici comble donc un manque en faisant apparaître l'importance de la lecture en Angleterre de la période victorienne à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Sont ici analysés, grâce à une présentation chronologique, les modalités de l'alphabétisation de la population, l'émergence de nouveaux lectorats, le rôle des cabinets de lecture, la création de bibliothèques publiques, les pratiques et les modes de lecture spécifiques de ce pays. Leur évolution au fil des décennies est mise en regard du contexte politique, économique et social.
