Anhand von sechs empirischen Portraits entwirft Laura Hanemann eine Phänomenologie der Solo-Selbstständigkeit, die Auskunft über das breite und dynamische Spektrum der Mentalitäten und Motivationen der Selbstständigkeit gibt. Sie analysiert die Wege und Folgen, die diese Arbeits- und Lebensform berufsbiographisch nach sich zieht. Solo-Selbstständigkeit zeigt sich als ein erwerbsbiographischer Prozess, der auf Veränderungen der Arbeitsgesellschaft reagiert, eine permanente Handlungsbereitschaft der Akteure verlangt und einen spezifischen Lebensrhythmus zwischen Aktivierung und Lähmung erzeugt.
