An American Jew finds himself out of time and place growing up in a Jewish ""ghetto"" in Newark, where assimilation was the unspoken though expected goal. The young Larkey reacts with confusion and soul-searching as he strives for that seemingly ideal American dream. His ultimate rejection of the norm results in an astonishing change of direction and location, which the older Larkey describes in vivid detail as he recalls his journey and survival in a new and different society. |
