Die Zimmerwirtin Mrs. Warren sucht Sherlock Holmes auf, weil ihr neuer Mieter sich äußerst seltsam benimmt. Er verlässt sein Zimmer nie und kommuniziert nur über handgeschriebene Zettel mit ihr. Der Meisterdetektiv sieht zunächst keinen Grund, sich einzuschalten, schließlich stellt ein solches Verhalten keinen Straftatbestand dar. Als dann aber Mrs. Warrens Mann Opfer eines dubiosen Überfalls wird, beginnt er doch, Nachforschungen anzustellen und stößt auf eine, der Mafia ähnlichen, Geheimorganisation, die das Leben der schönen Emilia Lucca und ihres Mannes bedroht.
