Den Roman »Dombey und Sohn« schuf Dickens in den Jahren 1846 bis 1848. Der damals etwa Fünfunddreißigjährige, auf der Höhe seines Schaffens stehend, beschäftigt sich auch hier wieder, wie schon in seinen früheren Arbeiten, mit den »moralischen Problemen« des Lebens. Die Probleme laufen alle auf die eine Hauptfrage hinaus: Wie ist das Leben recht zu gestalten, so daß wir nicht im Unmaß verhärten? Das rechte Maßhalten bedingt den schönen, wahren und guten Menschen. Aber alles Unmaß ist Sünde und führt ins Verderben. Unmaß im Besitz führt zur Habgier und zum Geiz und zu der Vereinsamung, wie sie Scrooge im »Weihnachtsabend« an sich erfahren hat. Unmaß im Selbstbewußtsein aber leiten zu Hochmut und Stolz und zu jener selbstgewählten grausam marternden Einsamkeit, unter deren Auswirkungen die Kinder des reichen Kaufherrn Dombey so schwer leiden... |
