Long description: Mit der fortschreitenden Ökonomisierung aller Lebensbereiche setzen sich auch bei der Ausgestaltung des sozialen Rechtsstaats zunehmend die Prinzipien des Marktes durch. Gegenwärtig sieht sich der aktivierende Sozialstaat mit großen Herausforderungen konfrontiert: Gefahr der Zementierung sozialer Ungleichheit, Verfestigung von Armut, Ausgrenzung, prekärer Beschäftigung und Langzeitarbeitslosigkeit, dramatische Unterversorgung mit bezahlbaren Wohnungen in Ballungsgebieten, wachsende Zuwanderung. Nicht nur die soziale Polarisierung nimmt deutlich zu, auch zwischen den Regionen in Deutschland wie auch in Europa vertiefen sich die Gräben. Im Kontext der europäischen Binnenwanderung werden die Grundsätze der Freizügigkeit und Gleichbehandlung wieder häufiger in Frage gestellt.
