L’objectif de cet ouvrage, en ce quarantième anniversaire de la mort de Jacques Maritain, n’est pas de revenir sur son œuvre, mais à partir de Maritain, d’aller au-delà de Maritain, de scruter notre temps à partir d’une pensée qui n’a guère vieilli, alors que les problématiques auxquelles nous sommes confrontés ne sont évidemment plus celles de son temps. Lui, a été confronté au monde des totalitarismes, de la négation radicale de la personne humaine, de la Shoah. Il a vécu le temps des grandes mutations des années 1950-1960, y compris pour l’Église avec le concile de Vatican II. Confronté à tant d’événements souvent dramatiques, il les a abordés en plaçant toujours la personne humaine au cœur de sa réflexion. Dans la société d’aujourd’hui, face aux mutations et aux angoisses de nos contemporains, certains ont des réactions populistes ou prônent le repli sur soi, sur une identité exacerbée. La pensée de Maritain se trouve à l’opposé. Elle parle de l’ouverture aux autres, de l’accueil de l’Altérité, de la démocratie. C’est un corpus de pensée qui permet d’affronter sans peur le monde actuel. Face aux nouvelles barbaries qui ont en commun avec les anciennes de récuser la personne, réaffirmer la centralité de cette dernière est un objectif majeur pour un idéal de civilisation. Jacques Maritain a constamment appelé, face aux douleurs de l’histoire, au prophétisme pour récuser des évolutions ou des choix qui seraient antihumains. Dans L’Homme et l’État, il aborde l’une des questions les plus difficiles aujourd’hui : le vivre ensemble. « Vivre ensemble ne signifie pas occuper le même lieu dans l’espace. Cela ne signifie pas non plus être soumis aux mêmes conditions physiques ou extérieures, aux mêmes pressions, ou au même genre de vie […]. Vivre ensemble signifie participer comme des hommes, non comme un bétail, c’est-à-dire en vertu d’une libre acceptation fondamentale, à certaines souffrances communes et à une certaine tâche commune.
