Einer der rätselhaftesten Texte Heinrich von Kleists – "Über das Marionettentheater" (1810) – übt seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts eine ungebrochene, über Disziplingrenzen hinausweisende Faszination auf Forschende aus. Bühnenadaptionen dieses Texts hingegen sind bislang kaum untersucht worden. Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit stehen Aufführungsanalysen dreier exemplarischer Bühnenadaptionen, die auf ihr Potenzial hin untersucht werden, spezifischen Leerstellen und Missverständnissen der textzentrierten Kleist-Forschung zu begegnen und diese so um neue Perspektiven und Deutungsansätze zu bereichern: Stéphane Braunschweigs "Sur le théâtre de marionnettes" (1994), Lenz Rifrazionis "Über das Marionettentheater" (1995) und Laurent Chétouanes "­Considering / Accumulations" (2015). In der Gegenüberstellung mit Forschungsarbeiten zu Kleists Text werden diese Adaptionen als Orte der Produktion diskursiven Sinns ausgewiesen und so als eigenständige Erkenntnisobjekte aufgewertet.
