ヒトの病気の原因を進化の過程に求める「進化医学」。本書は遺伝子のレベルから進化と病気の関係をとらえる。遺伝子は長い時間スケールで変化（進化）する。その変化が病気と結びつくとはどういうことか。ビタミン合成の能力を失ったことによる壊血病、尿酸が抗酸化の機能を肩代わりしたことで起きる痛風などの例を引きながら、遺伝子の変化が即座に病気に結びつくわけではなく、生活環境の変化スピードとのミスマッチによって発生するという視点を提供する。. |
