Erlich hat einen Ausspruch überliefert, der Esenins Verhältnis zur eigenen Biographie zwar stilisiert, in dieser Stilisierung aber einen Grundzug trifft: "Wenn du jemals über mich schreiben willst, so schreibe: er lebte nur durch seine Kunst, und nur mit ihr ging er durchs Leben."
