Professeur de littérature française à l’université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 durant trois décennies, poète lui-même, Pierre Caizergues a consacré sa vie de chercheur à trois poètes importants de la première moitié du xxe siècle, Apollinaire, Cendrars et Cocteau. Cet ouvrage réunit une sélection des articles qu’il leur a consacrés, ainsi qu’à son ami le poète Jean-Claude Renard. La plupart se lisent comme des enquêtes : porté par l’exigeant souci d’ajouter partout des éclairages révélateurs, un peu plus de lumière, Pierre Caizergues accède à des documents jusqu’alors tenus secrets ou réservés, à des collections particulières, à des archives d’éditeur, il reconstitue des correspondances, des collaborations de presse, en exhume d’inédites. Il y a en lui du détective, en même temps qu’un lecteur attentif aux enjeux de la création, qu’il sait irréductible aux enseignements des documents et de l’Histoire. Cocteau voyait dans le poète un « archéologue qui se fouille ». Remercions Pierre Caizergues d’avoir su nous faire connaître avec plus d’exactitude, à l’occasion de ses propres fouilles critiques, les mondes propres aux poètes qui ont occupé sa vie de chercheur.
