Dans le court XXe siècle de l'âge des extrêmes, la part de l'acteur en tant que sujet constitue d'évidence une thématique privilégiée et des plus nécessaires en Histoire. Les formes justement extrêmes de l'aliénation, de l'acceptation ou de l'enfouissement comme les répliques inverses d'affranchissement, de libération ou d'extériorisation interrogent sur les besoins conjoncturels de faire groupe, ou sous-groupe, de se donner ou de se désinhiber. En mettant la focale sur les figures de l'engagement, à travers des portraits d'acteurs et des tableaux de groupes, c'est à une traversée du XXe siècle fait d'individus intervenant sur leur quotidien et celui de la collectivité, que ce volume convie. Mais, bien que le jalon des guerres soit présent – de la Première guerre mondiale à la guerre d'Algérie en passant par la guerre froide –, une lecture seconde apparaît, celle frappée au sceau de l'émancipation. Dans un siècle dernier marqué par les victimes et placé sous l'emprise du traumatisme, le passé des femmes et des hommes figurant dans ce tableau distille un air épris de liberté, d'action et d'autonomie. Ces destins se disent et se lisent à la mesure des possibles induits par des contextes empreints de fortes contraintes politiques, sociales et culturelles, mais aussi de résolutions à mener librement une existence, à conquérir et pouvoir affirmer une identité, voire à changer la vie. Les débats historiographiques transverses à ces deux thématiques et à ces portraits, précisent ou reprennent des discussions qui ont nourri l'histoire contemporaine sociale et politique ces vingt dernières années. En particulier, l'articulation entre histoire culturelle et histoire politique, études de genre et des féminismes, emboîtements d'échelles, histoire orale, mais aussi écriture de l'histoire avec témoins, mémoire de la résistance et de l'occupation trouvent ici place.
