Als der jüdische Arzt und Schriftsteller Max Nordau 1892/93 seine kulturkritische Streitschrift "Entartung" publizierte, waren das Wort und |
|

die mit ihm bezeichneten Phänomene noch nicht durch die eliminatorischen Maßnahmen der Nationalsozialisten belastet. Aber die Verbindung von Kunst und Pathologie war durch Ärzte und Künstler vorbereitet; Nordau hat sie mit der diagnostischen Hellsicht des Arztes, mit dem eindrucksvollen Wissen des polyglotten Viellesers und der Brillanz des geschulten Rhetorikers an den avantgardistischen Kunstströmungen konkretisiert. Er verdeutlichte damit einen augenfälligen Zug der Moderne und setzte ihn scharfer Kritik aus, ohne ihn indessen mit nationalistischem und rassistischem Denken in Verbindung zu bringen. Nordaus "Entartung" ist das Schlüsselwerk für das Verständnis der Pathologisierung der künstlerischen Moderne. Die Heidelberger Germanistin Karin Tebben stellt Nordaus Werk in seinen kulturhistorischen Zusammenhang und erläutert die von Nordau oft nur abreviatorisch angesprochenen Kontexte in einem ausführlichen Stellenkommentar und Nachwort. |
