Élément fondateur de l’historiographie méthodique, l’événement avait déjà perdu son statut privilégié lorsque l’histoire des Annales promut une histoire davantage inscrite dans la longue durée et ouverte aux sciences sociales. C’est en 1974 que Pierre Nora parla du « retour de l’événement », dont Paul Ricœur fit cependant observer que ce « n’était pas exactement celui qui a été repoussé dans les marges de l’histoire par la génération précédente. » L’événement revenait comme « le troisième terme de la triade : structure, conjoncture, événemen ». Désormais, l’historien François Dosse parle de sa « renaissance », soulignant la « relation tout à fait essentielle entre langage et événement qui est aujourd’hui largement prise en compte et problématisée par les courants de l’ethnométhodologie, de l’interactionnisme et, bien sûr, par l’approche herméneutique. » Après avoir tenté de cerner la notion d’événement en la confrontant à d’autres (en particulier au fait divers) pour en analyser le rendement dans des domaines variés (littérature, encyclopédie, iconographie, documents historiques) et dans un espace principalement ibérique, c’est à ses traces – ou à ses échos – que se sont intéressés les auteurs de cet ouvrage collectif. Les travaux de chercheurs de différents domaines des sciences humaines et sociales ont ainsi alimenté la réflexion.
