Long description: Der erste Prosaband in der kritischen und kommentierten Gesamtausgabe der Werke und Briefe Georg Herweghs umfaßt 142 Texte, die zwischen 1837 und 1848 veröffentlicht wurden, sowie den Prosa-Nachlaß mit sechs Texten – unter anderem mit zwei Schülerarbeiten Herweghs aus der Zeit am Evangelischen theologischen Seminar in Maulbronn von 1833 und 1835. Den Kern dieses Bandes bildet dabei zu zwei Dritteln die Literaturkritik Herweghs in den Zeitschriften und Zeitungen „Europa“, „Deutsche Volkshalle“, „Telegraph für Deutschland“ und „Die Waage“. Diese Artikel wurden zum größten Teil bereits 1971 unter dem Titel „Georg Herwegh. Frühe Publizistik 1837-1841“ von Ingrid Pepperle, Agnes Ziegengeist und Johanna Rosenberg unter der Leitung von Bruno Kaiser ediert und kommentiert. Diese Ausgabe bildet somit den Grundstock für den nun erscheinenden Band, der aber unter anderem durch die politische Publizistik Herweghs eine bedeutende Erweiterung erfährt. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt hierbei auf dem Engagement Herweghs in der Auseinandersetzung zwischen Demokraten und Konservativen in Zürich |

vor den Wahlen des Großen Rates 1842. Als Gegenspieler des bekannten Staatsrechtlers und Politikers Johann Caspar Bluntschli sorgte Herwegh mit seinen Artikeln in der Augsburger „Allgemeinen Zeitung“ deutschlandweit für Aufmerksamkeit. Denn am Ende ging es hier nicht um ein kommunalpolitisches Ereignis, sondern um eine Positionsbestimmung der sich immer stärker differenzierenden politischen Strömungen jener Zeit in Europa. Des Weiteren versammelt der Band erstmals chronologisch alle Adressen, Manifeste und Proklamationen, die Herwegh als Präsident der „Deutschen demokratischen Gesellschaft“ und der „Deutschen demokratischen Legion“ in den unruhigen März- und Apriltagen 1848 verfasste bzw. mitverfasste. Einen dritten Komplex bilden die Artikel, die Herwegh Arnold Ruge für die Berliner Zeitung „Die Reform“ aus Paris zusandte und die ein sehr detailliertes Bild von der krisengeschüttelten französischen Hauptstadt zwischen der Juniinsurrektion und der Wahl Louis Napoléons zum Präsidenten im Dezember 1848 vermitteln. Alle Texte werden nach dem Erstdruck gegeben und bei Vorlage weiterer zeitgenössischer Drucke mit Lesarten und Varianten versehen. Der Kommentar erhellt inhaltliche Bezüge, historische und biographische Sachverhalte und weist das Bildungsgut der Zeit nach. Ein Namenregister ermöglicht einen schnellen Zugriff auf Personen und gibt somit zusätzlich Orientierung. Mit dem dritten Band der Gesamtausgabe findet die Edition der Werke und Briefe Georg Herweghs ihren Abschluss. |
