La Bretagne : une terre ouverte sur le monde. Terre de marins et terre de pionniers. Terre aussi de missionnaires, ce qu'on oublie trop souvent. De 1800 à 1990, pas moins de 12 000 prêtres, religieux, religieuses sont partis outre-mer pour vivre leur engagement. Au terme d'une longue enquête marquée du sceau de la rigueur historique (ce qui n'exclut pas la sympathie intérieure), Joseph Michel, qui fut l'un de ces missionnaires, fait revivre dans son ouvrage cette population d'aventuriers de la foi, partis vers d'autres rives, souvent sans espoir de retour. Il analyse finement les assises populaires de ce vaste mouvement et décrit en détail le tissu des ordres, instituts et congrégations qui l'ont ordonné. Missionnaires bretons d'outre-mer apporte ainsi un éclairage nouveau tant à l'histoire sociale de la Bretagne des deux derniers siècles qu'à celle du rayonnement international de son patrimoine culturel. |
