In questo volume - qui presentato in una nuova edizione integralmente rivista - i due maggiori partiti del dopoguerra, Democrazia cristiana e Partito comunista, sono studiati in quanto centri di partecipazione e di educazione politica, luoghi di formazione di grandi passioni collettive, elementi capaci di dinamizzare una società civile ancora prevalentemente statica, disorientata dalla guerra e dalla fine dell'esperienza fascista. Il loro intenso sforzo propagandistico e l'impegno volto a radicarsi nella società attraverso organizzazioni a carattere economico, assistenziale, culturale, ricreativo, sportivo hanno contribuito alla costruzione di uno spazio politico nazionale e alla creazione, per la prima volta in Italia, di una democrazia a partecipazione di massa. Ma dall'analisi emerge anche come il ruolo svolto da comunisti e cattolici nei primi anni del loro operato abbia sostanzialmente ostacolato lo sviluppo di un'identità nazionale forte - anomalia di cui ancora oggi si misurano gli effetti. |
