Sommario/riassunto

Inaugural lecture given on January 7th 2010 International Chair in Knowledge against Poverty (2009-2010)  The world’s response to the AIDS epidemic over the last thirty years has transformed public health practices and influenced international development policies. Here Peter Piot gives an appraisal of his work as the Founding Executive Director of UNAIDs from 1994 to 2008. He shows how the fight for AIDS prevention and the treatment of HIV-positive patients encouraged and helped develop multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral approaches, the involvement of the communities affected by the disease, the promotion of individuals’ rights, the stringent assessment of health programmes and the world-wide mobilisation of governments and civil society alike. Such approaches can be applied to help solve other health and development problems.  The International Knowledge against Poverty Chair receives support from the French Development Agency (Agence Française de Développement, AFD).
