Issu d’un dialogue franco-italien de longue durée, cet ouvrage tente d’éclairer les relations complexes et changeantes entre le monument et les populations qui vivent autour de lui. Ces relations sont hétérogènes, contradictoires, changeantes, c’est-à-dire éminemment historiques. En cela, elles contredisent le rêve d’immobilité qui est à la source de l’utopie monumentale.
