In diesem Buch wird das Verhältnis zwischen dem Islam und der Moderne, insbesondere aus der muslimischen Perspektive, behandelt. Ausgangspunkt hierfür ist die, vor allem im Westen, weit verbreitete Annahme, der Islam habe den Anschluss an die Moderne verpasst, welche auch als Erklärung für die Rückständigkeit in der muslimischen Welt dient. So soll das muslimische Denken beleuchtet werden, wobei Themen wie Demokratie, Modernisierung, Säkularisierung im Fokus stehen.
