Both the Christian Bible and Aristotle's works suggest that water should entirely flood the earth. Though many ancient, medieval, and early modern Europeans relied on these works to understand and explore the relationships between water and earth, particularly sixteenth-century Europeans were especially concerned with why dry land existed. This book investigates why sixteenth-century Europeans were so interested in water's failure to submerge the earth when their predecessors had not been. Analyzing biblical commentaries as well as natural philosophical, geographical, and cosmographical texts from these periods, Lindsay Starkey shows that European sea voyages to the Southern Hemisphere combined with the traditional methods of European scholarship and religious reformations led sixteenth-century Europeans to reinterpret water and earth's ontological and spatial relationships. The manner in which they did so also sheds light on how we can respond to our current water crisis before it is too late. |

population nantaise pour financer les opérations militaires contre une série de places fortes protestantes. Publié ici pour la première fois, ce document exceptionnel apporte une contribution à l'histoire de la Ligue en Bretagne (1589-1598) et à l'histoire sociale nantaise. À travers l'étude d'une harangue de César-Auffray Blanchard (1657), il est montré ensuite comment la monarchie s'y prenait pour obtenir le vote du don gratuit par les États provinciaux. L'analyse d'un compte de fabrique de Châteaubriant au xvie siècle dévoile enfin la façon dont l'argent pouvait servir, au quotidien, à améliorer le service religieux. Dans une seconde partie, c'est l'argent du commerce qui est mis en valeur : grâce à l'exploitation de sources notariales, trois techniques de financement des opérations maritimes au xviie siècle sont explorées. L'étude de l'inventaire après décès d'un capitaine de navire de la Rochefort puis celle des comptes des octrois de Nantes au xviiie siècle suggèrent comment les bénéfices réalisés dans le commerce venaient enrichir les individus et les collectivités. La présence du bâtiment de la Chambre des comptes sur le quai Ceineray rappelle encore aujourd'hui que Nantes abritait également dans ses murs un grand nombre d'officiers. La publication d'un pamphlet ligueur, « Le Dialogue d'Adrien Jacquelot », et une analyse des Harangues du premier président de la Chambre des comptes Auffray de Lescouët permettent d'avoir une idée de l'idéal de ces magistrats et des relations, contradictoires, qu'ils entretenaient avec le monde de l'argent. |
