Lloyd Gartner presents, in chronologically-arranged chapters, the story of the changing fortunes of the Jewish communities of the Old World (in Europe and the Middle East and beyond) and their gradual expansion into the New World of the Americas. The book starts in 1650, when there were no more than one and a quarter million Jews in the world (less than a sixth of the number at the start of the Christian era). Gartner leads us through the traditions, religious laws, communities and their interactions with their neighbours, through the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, and into Emancipation |

À l’heure où la Turquie met tout en œuvre en vue de sa future adhésion à l’Union européenne, les relations qu’elle entretient avec son voisin grec ainsi que le conflit chypriote sont d’une importance capitale. Depuis longtemps les relations entre la Turquie et la Grèce sont tendues, et particulièrement depuis l’invasion par l’armée turque en 1974 de la partie nord de Chypre. S’agit-il, comme on le croit trop souvent, uniquement d’un conflit politico-stratégique complexe ? Les relations gréco-turques suscitent actuellement des débats d’autant plus passionnels que Chypre (qui intégrera l’Union européenne en 2004), est devenu un enjeu majeur entre la Turquie et l’Union européenne, objet des rêves les plus utopistes des Turcs. Le rapprochement entre la Grèce et la Turquie, longtemps ennemis inavoués, s’est opéré grâce à l’intervention d’acteurs aussi bien étatiques que non-étatiques comme les associations, les artistes ou encore les hommes d’affaires. Ce rapprochement aidera-t-il à résoudre le conflit helléno-turc ? L’auteur de cet ouvrage, Gilles Bertrand, s’est fixé pour objectif de dépasser cette approche traditionnelle. Il se situe dans une perspective socio-historique et vise à mettre en évidence les mutations intervenues dans le conflit après la fin de la guerre froide à la lumière de la situation générale et du problème kurde. |
