The architect Cäsar Pinnau (1906 – 1988) has always been heatedly disputed: Was he a significant representative of National Socialist architecture? Did he transfer his attitude to his work after 1945? Or did he remain committed to classicism transcending history throughout his life? Eduard Führ explores how the identity of an architect is developed – through the selective compilation of his work and imprecise dates, through the construction of a biography and through publications. This study shows how Pinnau himself designed identities for the state, companies and elites in his work, and discusses the question how the concepts of an analysis of Pinnau are being used for controversial identifications within the discipline of architecture. |

Der Architekt Cäsar Pinnau (1906–1988) ist bis heute heftig umstritten: War er ein wichtiger Vertreter nationalsozialistischer Architektur? Hat sich seine Haltung in sein Wirken nach 1945 übertragen? Oder fühlte er sich zeitlebens dem überhistorischen Klassizismus verpflichtet?Eduard Führ untersucht, wie die Identität eines Architekten entworfen wird – durch selektive Zusammenstellung seiner Werke und durch unscharfe Datierungen, durch Konstruktion einer Biografie und durch Publikationen. Die Studie zeigt, wie Pinnau selbst in seinen Werken für Staat, Unternehmen und Eliten Identitäten gestaltet, und diskutiert, wie die Ansätze einer Analyse Pinnaus zu kontroversen Identitätsbestimmungen der Disziplin Architektur genutzt werden. |
