Methods for qualifying static battery chargers and inverters for Class 1E installations in a mild environment outside containment in nuclear power generating stations are described. The qualification methods set forth employ a combination of type testing and analysis, the latter including a justification of methods, theories, and assumptions used. These procedures meet the requirements of IEEE Std 323-1983, IEEE Standard for Qualifying Class 1E Equipment for Nuclear Power Generating Stations. |

"Historians often emphasize how, during both the difficult inter-war years and the Second World War, the Liberal government of Mackenzie King successfully reconciled the needs of majority rule with the recognition of minority voice, particularly in foreign affairs. How did a consummate anti-Catholic, who did not even speak French, manage to acknowledge and accommodate the vastly different demands of the French-speaking population? Ernest Lapointe, officially the minister of justice (1924-6, 1926-30, 1935-41) and minister of fisheries (1921-4), represented francophone Quebeckers in the federal cabinet. His ability to influence and reflect the views of the Quebec population, his loyalty to Mackenzie King, and in some cases, his threats of resignation, awarded him considerable weight in many external affairs questions. Analysing seventeen foreign policy decisions, the author uncovers Ernest Lapointe's relationship with King, and the voice of Quebec represented by his skillful interceptions."--Jacket |

If there is something today that unites Europeans, it is not the great 'House of Europe', but rather historic upheavals – the upheaval of the withdrawal of individual entities from conventional political ties. This also results in the crisis of the nation-state and its system of political order – representational democracy. In contrast, Europe could in fact be the opportunity for democracy to re-invent itself. Starting points for this exist both at the very top and the very bottom: at the top, the surrendering of national state power in favour of a functional EU, and at the bottom, optional local autonomy. It is only with such measures that the current rampant populism can be contained. |

Wenn etwas heute die Europäer vereint, dann nicht das große Haus Europa, sondern die historische Unruhe: die Unruhe des Austritts der Einzelnen aus herkömmlichen politischen Bindungen. Daraus resultiert auch die Krise des Nationalstaats und seines politischen Ordnungssystems, der repräsentativen Demokratie. Europa könnte dagegen die Chance der Demokratie sein, sich noch einmal neu zu erfinden. Anzusetzen wäre dafür ganz oben – und ganz unten: Abgabe nationalstaatlicher Macht nach oben zugunsten einer handlungsfähigen EU, und nach unten zugunsten freigestellter lokaler Selbstbestimmung. Nur so kann der grassierende Populismus aufgefangen werden. |
