Ce livre est construit sur deux concepts-clés: « la démocratie » et « le consensus ». Bien que poursuivant souvent le même idéal de liberté, d'égalité et de justice, les démocraties contemporaines sont cependant plurielles. Aucune expérience n'est la copie conforme d'une autre. Alors que la démocratie libérale se fonde sur la règle majoritaire, la démocratie africaine moderne pour bien s'enraciner devrait intégrer le mode traditionnel de gestion de la communauté que constitue le consensus.
