|
Le 13 novembre 1918, Sacd Zaghlûl, juriste et homme politique égyptien, prend la tête d'une délégation qui sollicite du Haut Commissaire britannique l'autorisation de se rendre à la Conférence de la Paix à Paris afin d'y exposer les revendications d'autodétermination de l'Égypte. En réponse à cette initiative, Zaghlûl est arrêté et exilé par les autorités britanniques. Il devient alors l'incarnation du peuple égyptien en lutte contre l'oppression de la puissance coloniale. Le soutien que lui manifeste la population se traduit par une longue période de troubles qui culmine avec la révolution de 1919 et contraint les Britanniques à le libérer. De 1924 à sa mort en 1927, « le Père du peuple égyptien » poursuivra inlassablement son combat pour l'indépendance de son pays. À partir des archives de la presse partisane, cet ouvrage examine la manière dont, entre 1927 et 1952, les différents héritiers politiques de Zaghlûl ont utilisé, déformé, transformé la mémoire de ce personnage riche et plein d'ambiguïtés, l'érigeant ainsi en véritable « lieu de mémoire ». En se fondant sur l'étude de neuf ouvrages de type biographique, ce travail de recherche suggère également une analyse de l'évolution des référents identitaires et des valeurs nationales promus au seirt de la société égyptienne durant cette période. The spectacular development of early consumer society in Britain, France and the United States had a profound impact on constructions of femininity and masculinity, and commercial and cultural values in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Focusing on novels by Theodore Dreiser, George Gissing and Emile Zola, Just Looking, first published in 1985, addresses itself to a central paradox of the period: the perceived antithesis of the terms ""commerce"" and ""culture"" which emerged at a time which saw the actual drawing together of commercial and cultural practices.< |
