|
Pourquoi faire de l'historiographie ? Aujourd'hui, alors que l'histoire affronte, comme d'autres sciences, des interrogations existentielles nées de la dilatation de son objet et de l'épuisement des grands paradigmes explicatifs, l'historiographie semble offrir un terrain de repli commode, une sorte d'îlot où attendre le reflux des vagues et prendre un peu de hauteur pendant le mauvais temps. Elle est en réalité autant un miroir offert aux historiens contemporains qu'une aide à la décision en matière de recherche et d'enseignement supérieur. Le présent volume souhaite apporter une contribution à une histoire faite dans le cadre d'institutions pensées pour et par des historiens. À cet égard, les temps de genèse et de jeunesse de l'École française de Rome, dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle, souvent oubliés, constituent un terrain d'observation privilégié où la multiplication des points de vue des différents acteurs – hiérarchiques, savants, français, italiens – concourent à expliquer les raisons et les modalités d'un enracinement qui a façonné le caractère original d'une communauté scientifique et d'une institution de recherche. |
