Le monde carcéral, par le silence qui l’entoure et du fait du tabou dont le concept d’enfermement est entouré depuis toujours, est mal connu du grand public. Au cours du temps, l’imaginaire collectif a été entraîné à ne voir dans cet espace qu’un vague ensemble dépourvu de toute humanité. Le centre pénitentiaire pour femmes Santa Mónica de Lima, malgré des conditions de détention rigoureuses et un système judiciaire rongé par la corruption, est présenté ici sous un visage infiniment humain. Plus de 80 femmes détenues dans la prison Santa Mónica ont livré le récit de leur vie et de leur expérience carcérale, ou simplement quelques impressions sur l’environnement qui était temporairement le leur. C’est sur cette base que repose le présent ouvrage, résultat de l’analyse d’entretiens effectués entre septembre et novembre 2007 et d’un travail de suivi qui se poursuit aujourd’hui auprès des détenues du premier centre pénitentiaire féminin du Pérou.  Quelles sont les conditions de détention de ces femmes ? Quels rapports entretiennent-elles au monde extérieur en termes affectifs, relationnels ou socio-économiques ? Bien qu’il connaisse depuis dix ans une croissance soutenue, le Pérou demeure un pays très inégalitaire et la réalité sociale y est bien différente de celle que l’on



connaît en Europe. Appréhender l’univers des femmes incarcérées dans ce pays contraint donc le lecteur à penser une réalité nouvelle. La présente étude met en relation étroite les mécanismes de fonctionnement de la société péruvienne et le monde carcéral pour démontrer dans quelle mesure se reproduisent les inégalités au sein du monde clos de la prison.
