In che modo in una cultura diversa dalla nostra si «costruisce» l'essere umano e si «plasmano» le relazioni sociali? Quali sono le istituzioni indigene deputate a «forgiare» l'umanità? Attraverso un viaggio antropologico avvincente fra alcune popolazioni della foresta equatoriale dell'Africa e un dialogo originale con il pensiero occidentale (da Dostoevskij a Nietzsche, da Sofocle ad Hannah Arendt), si indagano i progetti e i tentativi degli indigeni riguardanti la costruzione della società e dell'uomo. Rituali, patti di sangue e società segrete, spesso intrecciati fra loro, si rivelano però strumenti precari e illusori di fronte al fluire della vita e della storia.
