Sommario/riassunto

This paper uses a partial equilibrium framework to evaluate the relative efficiency, distributional and  revenue implications of rice tariffs and targeted transfers in Madagascar, especially in the context of  identifying their respective roles for poverty alleviation. Although there are likely to be substantial  efficiency gains from tariff reductions, these accrue mainly to higher income households. In addition,  poor net rice sellers will lose from lower tariffs. Developing a system of well designed and  implemented targeted direct transfers to poor households is thus likely to be a substan

Sommario/riassunto

What is the current status of sociological research on the family and what direction is it taking ? What is the relevance and specificity of a sociological approach to understanding the family at the turn of the century ? These are the principal questions addressed in the present article. On a theoretical level, the authors comment on the fragmentation of the field of family sociology into multiple objects (e.g. maternity, paternity, divorce, marriage, etc.) and the isolation of researchers (those working on divorce, for instance, have little contact with those working on paternal disengagement of single-parent mothers). This tendency towards increasing specialisation and the development of family 'sub-objects' has enabled sociologists to develop a more detailed understanding of the diverse dimensions of family realities. At the same time, however, it has made it difficult to develop a global perspective on the family as object. On a methodological level, the authors comment on the coexistence of a plurality of methods and approaches and the openness of the sociology of the family towards peripheral disciplines. Finally, according to the authors, one of the most significant contributions of the sociology of the family to sociology in general has been to demonstrate that the family is an important site for understanding both the relationship between the individual and the collectivity and the complexity of processes of human and social reproduction, socialisation and identity construction. The sociology of the family also reveals the tensions and contradictions between diverse social actors, acknowledges the relativism of family structures and functions, the multiplicity of family types, and bears witness to the dynamism of diverse societies with respect to the transformation, innovation and reconstruction of family life.
