Ce livre aborde un terrain plutôt méconnu en sciences humaines et sociales, celui de l’émigration française. En s’intéressant à cette expatriation au Canada, notamment dans ses grandes villes anglophones comme Toronto, on se rend compte que ce pays est souvent perçu comme jeune, dynamique et bilingue. A priori, ceci semble garantir aux migrants francophones à la fois le dépaysement et la possibilité sécurisante de recourir au français dans la vie de tous les jours. Même si la découverte de la réalité anglo-canadienne réserve des surprises, il n’en demeure pas moins que les compétences linguistiques y sont souvent considérées comme un bien, une marchandise, voire un atout. Dans cette optique, la langue procure aux migrants de nouvelles perspectives d’emploi et même parfois un certain pouvoir dans les nouveaux cercles auxquels leurs parcours ouvrent les portes. Simultanément, mais quelque peu paradoxalement, la capitalisation du français, langue d’origine, impose à ces migrants des contacts accrus avec l’anglophonie et avec les Canadiens allophones. S’appuyant sur des principes constructivistes, ce livre pose les questions de la rétention des identités d’origine, de l’éventuelle convergence vers la culture majoritaire anglo-canadienne, des attitudes vis-à-vis du multiculturalisme et de l’apprentissage de l’altérité. "Let me tell you a story," each film seems to offer silently as its opening frames hit the screen. But sometimes the film finds a voice-an off-screen narrator-for all or part of the story. From Wuthering Heights and Double Indemnity to Annie Hall and Platoon, voice-over narration has been an integral part of American movies.Through examples from films such as How Green Was My Valley, All About Eve, The Naked City, and Barry Lyndon, Sarah Kozloff examines and analyzes voice-over narration. She refutes the assumptions that words should only play a minimal role in film, that "showing" is superior to "telling," or that the technique is inescapably authoritarian (the "voice of god"). She questions the common conception that voice-over is a literary technique by tracing its origins in the silent era and by highlighting the influence of radio, documentaries, and television.
