El contenido del libro responde en su desarollo al título que lo antecede, ya que ofrece una interpretación nueva de la iglesia y convento de San Francisco desde diversas perspectivas científicas: históricas, analíticas y arquitectónicas. Se ha descompuesto metodológicamente el conjunto franciscano en sus componentes más importantes; y de cada uno se hace la interpretación integral. Los historiadores ofrecían sobre San Francisco la visión que correspondía al estado del conocimiento histórico vigente a mediados del siglo XX. Ha sido necesario revisar en profundidad la versión histórica tradicional refente a San Francisco para adecuarla al progreso de las investigaciones históricas basadas en informaciones documentales antes no utilizadas. La revisión completa del conocimiento histórico se integra con la reinterpretación arquitectónica de los múltiples componentes del conjunto franciscano. Resulta de ello una versión renovada de la arquitectura franciscana, más actualizada y diferente de la que regía en otra etapa ya superada de la historia arquitectónica. Al proyectar esta nueva versión de San Francisco sobre la arquitectura virreinal de Lima, deriva de ello un conocimiento más pleno, renovado y enriquecido de la arquitectura de Lima en los siglos XVII y XVIII. |
