• Sommario/riassunto: Ce n'est pas coutume dans notre France centralisée, le premier quotidien « national » n'est pas parisien, mais régional. Rennes, 2 août ; 1899 : dans la torpeur de l'été et les passions du procès Dreyfus, paraissaient les 1 800 exemplaires d'un nouveau journal s'ajoutant aux quatre quotidiens déjà publiés dans la ville. Derrière cette feuille de quatre pages, fabriquée dans des conditions artisanales, un petit groupe de turbulents « abbés démocrates », emmenés par l'abbé Trochu, par un jeune avocat brestois, Emmanuel Desgrées du Lou et par une poignée de notables rennais. Quel rapport entre les deux événements ? Le passant trouve la réponse au 38 de la rue du Pré-Botté à Rennes : la rédaction locale d'Ouest-France occupe l'ancien immeuble de L'Ouest-Éclair. S'il s'agit bien de deux entreprises différentes, au sens substantiel, depuis la rupture d'août 1944, il reste qu'Ouest-France a récupéré alors plus que l'immeuble et le matériel : l'héritage doctrinal et le lectorat de L'Ouest-Éclair, lequel n'avait pas tardé à accéder, dès avant la Première Guerre mondiale, aux tout premiers rangs des quotidiens de province, rayonnant sur tout l'Ouest armoricain. Le secret de celle réussite tenait sans doute à un double pari. Pari entrepreneurial : celui du passage au stade de l'entreprise industrielle et de la modernité technique, sans renier les valeurs du catholicisme social, au principe de l'expérience. Pari éditorial : contribuer à faire accepter la République dans une région qui, les souvenirs de la Révolution et de la chouannerie aidant, était loin d'y être partout disposée. La véritable synthèse historique sur l'histoire de L'Ouest-Éclair, jusqu'ici lue souvent de façon unilatérale à travers les souvenirs de Paul Delourme (l'abbé Trochu), est encore sans doute prématurée. Mais ce centenaire a cependant poussé une équipe d'historiens à procurer quelques éclairages sur les débuts d'une aventure de presse sans guère d'équivalent ailleurs en France.
