Come si conduce una valutazione? Quali difficoltà si incontrano nel suo concreto svolgimento? Che tipo di soluzioni si possono adottare per farne davvero uno strumento utilizzabile da chi decide? I manuali e gli articoli sull'argomento, ormai molto diffusi anche in Italia, solitamente si intrattengono sui concetti generali, oppure descrivono i risultati prodotti dai singoli studi valutativi, ma assai raramente chiariscono che la valutazione è un campo professionale specifico, che deve fare i conti con la realtà di processi decisionali complessi. Non raccontano come il valutatore si trovi spesso ad affrontare, in corsa, problemi non previsti; ad escogitare strategie per indurre i committenti a prendere sul serio il suo lavoro; a cercare una collaborazione con i diversi soggetti coinvolti nel processo valutativo. Il volume è una prima risposta a questa domanda di concretezza. I sette casi in esso contenuti, elaborati da professionisti da anni impegnati in attività di analisi e valutazione, descrivono metodi e risultati, ma puntano soprattutto a raccontare la storia di esperienze realmente vissute dagli autori: come hanno gestito il rapporto col committente, quali errori hanno commesso e quali strade hanno seguito per tentare di correggerli; come hanno scelto un determinato approccio e come hanno tentato di far utilizzare al meglio gli esiti delle analisi condotte.
