• Sommario/riassunto: L’analyse de la création de Philippe Jaccottet présentée dans cette étude a pour originalité de suivre chronologiquement la production du poète et de tenter une analyse recueil après recueil afin d’en suivre les modulations qui la parcourent. Par là c’est à une critique de type existentiel que nous avons affaire. De L’Effraie à Pensées sous les nuages se lisent successivement l’élaboration et l’épanouissement d’une rêverie réparatrice (L’Effraie, L’Ignorant, Airs) compensant la conscience cruelle du temps qui tue, la subversion de cette rêverie par la mystique dans Paysages avec figures absentes, et un pur affrontement de la négativité qui fait le fond des derniers recueils ici étudiés : A la lumière d’hiver et Pensées sous les nuages. Après L’Effraie et ses notations où s’inscrit une sensualité - notations riches de potentialités de rêveries -, L’Ignorant, livre de sagesse, s’exerce à la dépossession. Le poète, veilleur, passeur, s’efforce de tourner avec la lumière, de persévérer avec les eaux et de passer avec les oiseaux. Éléments d’un songe donne les clefs de l’inspiration des poèmes et proses qui suivent (Airs, Paysages avec figures absentes) : il s’agit d’être à l’écoute du divin répandu dans l’herbe. Airs offre une lecture au fil des saisons qui note le battement de la vie. Dans Paysages avec figures absentes on voit le poète passer de l’inscription simplement recueillie à la rage de l’inscription. Insensiblement la page du sensible - si ardemment tenue dans Airs -, est trouée et la rêverie s’échappe dans l’Illimité. Le paysage devient sermon. Leçons et Chants d’en-bas rappellent à l’humilité le rêveur trop confiant dans les mots. L’expérience concrète de la mort qui frappe les proches détruit toute velléité de poursuivre l’alchimie rêveuse qui rendrait le monde à l’ignorant frappé par les cris de l’effraie. • Sommario/riassunto: Stuyvesant Bound is an innovative and compelling evaluation of the last director general of New Netherland. Donna Merwick examines the layers of culture in which Peter Stuyvesant forged his career and performed his responsibilities, ultimately reappraising the view of Stuyvesant long held by the majority of U.S. historians and commentators. Borrowing its form from the genre of eighteenth- and nineteenth-​century learned essays, Stuyvesant Bound invites the reader to step into a premodern worldview as Merwick considers Stuyvesant's role in history from the perspectives of duty, belief, and loss. Stuyvesant is presented as a mid-seventeenth-century magistrate obliged by his official oath to manage New Netherland, including ; installing Calvinist politics and belief practices under the fragile conditions of early modern spirituality after the Protestant Reformation. Merwick meticulously reconstructs the process by which Stuyvesant became his own archivist and historian when, recalled to The Hague to answer for his surrender of New Netherland in 1664, he gathered together papers amounting to almost 50,000 words and offered them to the States General. Though Merwick weaves the theme of loss throughout this meditation on Stuyvesant's career, the association culminates in New Netherland's fall to the English in 1664 and Stuyvesant's immediate recall to Holland to defend his surrender. Rigorously researched and unabashedly interpretive, Stuyvesant Bound makes a major contribution to recovery of the cultural and religious diversity that marked colonial America.
