Admired for its elaborate breeding displays and treasured as a game bird, the Greater Sage-Grouse is a charismatic symbol of the broad open spaces in western North America. Unfortunately these birds have declined across much of their range-which stretches across 11 western states and reaches into Canada-mostly due to loss of critical sagebrush habitat. Today the Greater Sage-Grouse is at the center of a complex conservation challenge. This multifaceted volume, an important foundation for developing conservation strategies and actions, provides a comprehensive synthesis of scientific information on the biology and ecology of the Greater Sage-Grouse. Bringing together the experience of thirty-eight researchers, it describes the bird's population trends, its sagebrush habitat, and potential limitations to conservation, including the effects of rangeland fire, climate change, invasive plants, disease, and land uses such as energy development, grazing, and agriculture. |

Au début des années 2000, le musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Strasbourg eut à répondre à plusieurs demandes de restitution. C’est dans le sillage de ces affaires que l’institution entama un travail pionnier de recherche sur la provenance des œuvres conservées dans sa collection. Après sa phase de création et sa refondation soutenue par Wilhelm von Bode de 1889 à 1918, puis la période de l’Alsacien francophile Hans Haug entre les deux guerres, les années 1940 à 1944 ont marqué en effet une étape cruciale dans la constitution de ses fonds artistiques. Le régime nazi confie alors la direction du musée à l’historien de l’art Kurt Martin : déjà à la tête de la Kunsthalle de Karlsruhe depuis 1934, il est nommé administrateur général des musées d’Alsace et de Bade en 1940. C’est le parcours de cette personnalité complexe à travers une époque régie par la contrainte et l’idéologie que Tessa Friederike Rosebrock s’attache à éclairer ici, tout en analysant l’ambitieuse politique d’acquisitions qu’il mit en œuvre à Strasbourg au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Dans le portrait d’un homme et de ses actions, l’histoire tourmentée des institutions artistiques de part et d’autre du Rhin dans les années 1940 et l’immédiat après-guerre se fait jour. Sources et documents inédits racontent dans le détail la vie du musée, les achats et les réseaux sur lesquels Kurt Martin s’appuie, le transfert de la collection dans des dépôts sécurisés allemands à la fin de la guerre et sa réinstallation au palais Rohan à Strasbourg après 1945. Cet ouvrage nous invite donc à porter un regard neuf sur l’histoire et les histoires dans lesquelles toute œuvre de musée se trouve prise. |
