À l’occasion du départ à la retraite de Michelle Fournie, ses collègues historiens et historiens de l’Art de l’Université de Toulouse II le Mirail ont souhaité réunir en son honneur un volume de Mélanges. Bien plus qu’un volume disparate, nous avons voulu construire un ouvrage cohérent organisé autour de ses thèmes de recherche. Le dialogue établi entre le Ciel et la Terre à la fin du Moyen Âge fut notre guide. En effet, l’œuvre majeure de Michelle Fournie, Le ciel peut-il attendre ? Le culte du Purgatoire dans le Midi de la France, publié aux Éditions du Cerf en 1997 a marqué nombre d’historiens de la religion et des mentalités. Les premiers temps de cette conversation sacrée prennent ici la forme d’une interrogation sur les modalités des suppliques adressées aux reliques des saints et à leurs images en Europe à la fin du Moyen Âge. Le colloque pacifique ou tendu entre le Ciel et la Terre se poursuit au travers d’une série de contributions consacrées aux Églises méridionales et à leurs rapports aux pouvoirs terrestres. Enfin, la relation se conclut en donnant la parole aux dévotions collectives et aux différentes formes de la piété ordinaire. Ce volume constitue, certes, un hommage, mais il est aussi, nous l’espérons, une pérégrination sur les chantiers actuels de l’histoire religieuse et des mentalités médiévales. |
