"Si les Français se disent majoritairement attachés à la laïcité, leurs opinions divergent sur le sens à accorder à ce mot. En résulte un débat houleux qui oppose les partisans d'une 'laïcité ouverte' aux défenseurs d'une 'laïcité républicaine.' Le problème est que la reconnaissance des identités religieuses n'est jamais neutre: toute politique d'accommodement permet nécessairement à la loi divine de s'appliquer (parfois contre les lois de la République)--ce qui remet en cause l'équilibre entre les autorités respectives de la Cité et de Dieu. Pour autant, la laïcité de combat, qui fait sens en théorie, n'est plus adaptée à notre expérience existentielle et politique. Comment nos régimes démocratiques doivent-ils organiser la coexistence des lois divines et humaines ? Dans quelle mesure doit-on pouvoir pratiquer librement sa religion dans un État laïc ? Et à quelles conditions ?
