Seit dem 17. Jahrhundert ist Naturforschung durch die Erkenntnisstrategien der explorativen und operativen Epistemologie charakterisiert. Ist der Ort der explorativen Epistemologie das Labor und ihr Modus das Experimentieren, so ist der Ort der operativen Epistemologie die Mathematik und ihr Modus das geometrische Konstruieren, algebraische Deduzieren und arithmetische Berechnen. Mit beiden Erkenntnisstrategien lässt sich Neues entdecken und herstellen bzw. prognostizieren und so das Unbekannte erforschen. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wandeln sich beide Strategien grundlegend. Wissenschaftliche Erfahrung wird an Experimentier- und Messapparate delegiert und mathematische Anschauung an die Symbolsysteme der modernen Mathematik gebunden. Dies treibt die Erfassung des Unbekannten und Neuen weiter voran: als neue Physik der Quantenmechanik und Relativitätstheorie, als Studium komplexer Systeme und als Prognose ganz neuer Objekte, wobei die Transformationen der Mathematik eine entscheidende Rolle spielen. |
